"Raymond, I don't think I'm in Mexico anymore" features my own voice-over, as I film myself installing an altar in a cemetery and reflecting in real time.
I share my experiences immigrating to Canada, living with a close friend, and navigating the challenges and joys of life split between Mexico and Canada.
Through this installation-performance, I reimagine the Día de los Muertos ritual—so central to Mexican tradition—by bringing it into a place that still feels unfamiliar to me. After 15 years in Canada, I find myself constantly renegotiating my identity and sense of belonging.
This video is my attempt to show how tradition can adapt and endure, and how honouring our loved ones in cemeteries crosses borders and remains vital. My relationship with Raymond is at the heart of this piece, but it’s also about my emotional journey with those I’ve lost, leading up to a poignant return to the cemetery.
